When it comes to enhancing the aesthetics and security of your property, few things are as essential as choosing the right fencing materials. Timber fencing, in particular, offers a timeless charm and natural appeal that can transform any outdoor space.

However, selecting the right timber and understanding the materials required for your project can be daunting. That's why we've put together this comprehensive guide to help you make informed decisions and create the perfect timber fence for your needs.

Timber fencing can transform any outdoor space

1. Measure the Boundary

The first step in choosing the right timber fencing materials is to accurately measure the boundary of your property. Once you have determined the boundary length, divide it into 2.4-metre centres. This will give you the number of posts you require. Remember to include an extra post beside gates, driveways, or any other openings for added movability.

2. Calculate the Number of Rails

Next, divide the boundary length by 4.8 metres. This calculation will give you the number of rails needed for one row of fencing. For fences that are 1.2 metres and 1.5 metres high, you will typically need two rails in each row. Fences that are 1.8 metres high, will require three rows of rails.

3. Determine the Number of Palings or Pickets

For palings with a 100mm cover and no gap, simply divide the length of the fence by 100mm to calculate the number of palings required. If you prefer pickets, divide the length of the fence by 90mm. Keep in mind that pickets are approximately 75mm wide with a 15mm gap between each picket.

4. Order Extra Materials

It's always a good idea to order a couple of extra materials to account for any potential damage or mistakes during installation. Having a surplus of materials on hand ensures that your project can proceed smoothly without delays.

5. Seek Professional Advice

Depending on the style and height of your fence, you may need the assistance of a professional fencer or builder to accurately calculate the amount of materials required. Unlike older methods that relied on toxic chemicals, ACQ uses a combination of alkaline copper and quaternary ammonium compounds to strengthen the wood against decay.
